Estimating time when your estimates are usually wrong

If 50 minutes routinely becomes 3 hours of accidental hyperfocus or, conversely, never starts because it feels too big, try 15–25 minute visual sessions. Completing a short block builds evidence that starting is safe. You can chain blocks when momentum is good.
Externalize the plan where you can see it
Whiteboards, sticky notes, and open checklists beat plans buried in apps you forget to open. Pair the visual plan with the visual timer: what you’re doing, and how long this slice lasts.
Compassion over correction
Time blindness often accumulates secondary pain: shame about lateness, stories about being unreliable, conflict with people who experience time differently. Tools should reduce harm, not become new ways to self-punish.
If you blow past a timer, the useful question is not “What’s wrong with me?” It is “What would make the next transition louder, earlier, or kinder?” Maybe you need a stronger warning, a visible timer across the room, a body-doubling friend, or a shorter initial commitment.
Also respect hyperfocus when it is serving you—and interrupt it when it is stealing sleep, meals, or relationships. Visual timers are one of the few polite interrupt systems that don’t require another person to police you.
Practical starter kit
If you want a simple beginning:
- Pick one visual countdown you can see without unlocking a nest of apps.
- Use it for one daily transition that usually goes wrong (leaving home, ending games, stopping study).
- Add a 5-minute warning and a one-line exit ritual.
- Log actual durations for a week on three recurring tasks.
- Optionally join a shared timer session for tasks that need body doubling.
Small experiments beat total life redesigns. You’re building an external nervous system for time—one cue at a time.
